Wrap Packaging

Is it bad to thaw something by letting it sit out?

I wanna make steaks but they're frozen and thawing them in the fridge would take to long. Can I just let them sit out (shrink-wrapped package) until they thaw? Or should I run warm water over them?

Dangerous! Thaw them in *cold* water. It won't take much longer than warm water, and is much safer!

EDIT: Cold water thawing is actually faster than "sitting out," because of the thermal mass of water being much larger than that of air.
