Rotary tool, grinding hardened steel, Al2O3 or SiC?
I've got an 18 volt rotary tool. I need to grind down a steel pin (axle) so that I can get it to fit inside a bearing. There seems to be an interference fit between the pin and the bearing. It's impossible to manually push the pin through the bearing. I want the pin to extend out 5mm on either side of the bearing.
So would a rotary tool be a good way to grind down this pin? Should I use Al2O3 or SiC grinding bits?
I want a little bit of friction between the pin and the bearing but right now this interference fit is just impossible to work with! What does industry do with an intereference fit? Do they just whack it with a big hammer?!?!
Go for Al2O3 grinding bits.
For interference fit you have to machine the pin in such a way that it gives 20 MICRON INTERFERENCE.
Al2O3 is tougher than SiC. Therefore it is preferred to grind material having high
tensile strength like steel. Moreover, Al2O3 shows higher chemical inertness than SiC
towards steel leading to much improved wear resistance during grinding.
