does mount magnets side by side reduce magnetic strength?
if i were to very precisely mount small (.5" diameter) but strong neodymium (rare earth) magnets side by side with all of the North poles facing the same way in a flat surface, does mounting them close together with conflicting magnetic fields impact the pull strength dramatically?
also does shielding with smooth/gentle angles drastically impact the magnetic pull in a negative way if placed close to the magnet itself (within .25")?
If I undrestand your questions right,
1 To mount several magnets with their north poles forming a flat surface would increase the extension of the magnetic field in the centre of the plane since the field lines would have nowhere else to go, so yes. But it would not increase the strength per se as the magnets themselves are still the same strength (ie the same density of field lines per unit area). This would be very hard to do, however, due to them opposing each other.
2 To make magnets "conflict" (putting N and S poles close together, I guess??) does decrease the field they project, but it increases the field directly between the conflicting poles which tries to pull them together.
3. Not much can "get in the way" of a magnetic field except another magnet or magnetically suceptible material, which experiences a force and/or is magnetised itself. It is possible to guide fields, of course, but I'm not sure you can "shield" a permanent magnet, as such. So no.
