What are the dynamics behind the HVAC blower motor speed control, on a 2001 Nissan Sentra?

A good many months ago, the blower ceased to operate in this vehicle, unless the blower motor speed control switch was in its highest position, i.e., #4. Initially, it operated normally in this position. Now, blower output is weak and labored. My thoughts are, the switch is a solid state device wholly responsible for speed control, i.e., the blower motor is not a multi-speed motor.

all blower motors only have one speed, its the blower motor resistor that allows the consumer to change or adjust the fan speed.

so most likely what happened is your resistor failed (very common and I sell a lot of them) then with it only working on the high speed you eventually burned up your blower motor,,,

most likely you will need a new blower motor and resistor now, but back when it first acted up you could of fixed the problem with just a resistor.
